PSHE

At Rydon Primary, PSHE is delivered through the Life Lessons scheme as a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum taught weekly in all year groups. The curriculum is structured around three overarching strands which support pupils’ personal development from self-awareness, to relationships, to responsible citizenship.

1. Understanding Myself – This strand focuses on developing pupils’ self-awareness, emotional literacy and understanding of personal responsibility.

Wellbeing
Pupils learn to recognise, understand and regulate their emotions. They develop resilience, coping strategies and a secure understanding of how to maintain positive mental health.

My Body & Me
Children gain an age-appropriate understanding of physical development, personal safety and growing up, including statutory Relationships and Health Education. Respect for their own and others’ bodies is emphasised.

Healthy Choices
Pupils learn how to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing, including exercise, nutrition, sleep and personal safety. They understand how choices can impact both physical and mental health.

2. Self with Others – This strand supports pupils in developing positive, respectful relationships and effective interpersonal skills.

Healthy Relationships
Children learn about friendship, family relationships, kindness, respect and managing conflict. They develop empathy, communication skills and an understanding of appropriate boundaries in an age-appropriate context.

3. Self within the World – This strand prepares pupils to understand their place in the wider community and society.

Identity & Community
Pupils explore diversity, equality and inclusion. They learn about belonging, rights and responsibilities, and develop respect for different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. British Values are explicitly taught and embedded.

Digital Lives
Pupils are taught how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. They learn about digital citizenship, online relationships, privacy and managing risk.

Aspiration & Money
Children are encouraged to set goals, develop perseverance and understand how effort links to achievement. They are introduced to financial literacy, including saving, spending and understanding the value of money.

Through these three strands, the PSHE curriculum ensures pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes required to understand themselves, build positive relationships and contribute responsibly to life in modern Britain.
