INFORMATION FOR NEW PARENTS

School Day

School begins at 9.00am. The classroom gates are open from 8.45am where a member of staff will be waiting to greet your child. Some children might find it harder than others to leave their parent at the school gate  initially. We will do our best to support a smooth transition and make this a happy process for your child and yourselves.
Parents are requested to contact the school on 01626 356420 if a child is absent for whatever reason i.e. illness, medical/dental appointments. If absence from school is required for an appointment, please contact the office or your child’s class teacher.
School finishes at 3.15pm. The children will leave by the front door of the classroom which opens up onto the front playground. Please wait outside the covered area in a position where your child can easily spot you. You will need to inform your child’s class teacher with the names of the trusted adults that you give permission to collect your child. At the end of the school day, if an adult will be collecting your child who is not on the permission form then you would need to contact the school office to inform them.

Lunchtimes

Lunch break is from 12.00-1.00pm. EYFS children go first for their lunch at 12.00pm in the hall. They can bring in a healthy packed lunch from home or have a school dinner. Children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 are   offered a free school lunch. There are 3 school dinners options: hot dinner, vegetarian hot dinner or a sandwich. All lunches come with a pudding and a drink. Please complete the online form/email school office if your child has any allergies and the kitchen staff will be informed. If your child brings in a packed lunch from home, please ensure it is nut/seed free as we have many children in school with severe nut/seed allergies.
At the beginning of the school day children are asked whether they will be having a school dinner or   having their own packed lunch from home. It is very useful if you could let your child know what the       options are each day and discuss which option they would like (menu can be found on the school      website).
Mealtime assistants are in the hall to help your child at lunchtimes.
Once your child has finished their lunch they have a playtime in the front playground.·
Where parents or carers are in receipt of either Income Support, Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit) or Employment and Support Allowance (income related), you will need to apply for a free school meal entitlement, even if your child does not have a school meal. This is most important for the school as it has a direct benefit to the school’s budget and means that the school will receive additional funding in the budget to support your child’s education.

Playtimes

Children have a morning playtime, lunch playtime and an afternoon playtime on the front playground with EYFS and Year 1 and 2 children. We try hard to ensure that all new children are given as much support as they require to help them feel safe and happy. Members of staff are on duty each playtime to ensure this happens. Children are encouraged to tell an adult if they are upset, lonely or have hurt themselves.
Qualified first aiders are available each playtime if your child accidently falls. They may come home with a bump note in their book bags if they have had to have first aid administered. Please check book bags daily. At lunchtimes, mealtime   assistants will be available on the playground to support your child, along with responsible Year 6 children (buddies).
For morning play your child will need to bring a piece of fruit as a snack and a drink of water in a named drinks bottle. Please name fruit as well.
For afternoon play your child will be able to have a piece of fruit provided by the free fruit for schools scheme and a carton of milk provided by the ‘Cool Milk’ scheme. Please sign up for this, see details in your pack.

School Uniform

Click here for the school uniform policy.

At Rydon Primary School we pride ourselves on how smart our children are in their school uniform. We expect children to dress in an appropriate manner for school and for the activities that they are undertaking in the curriculum. The full school uniform policy can be found on our school website.

Children are expected to wear:

Collared white shirt/blouse with elasticated school tie, grey/black trousers/skirt/pinafore, grey socks, maroon v-neck jumper/cardigan, plain black velcro shoes. In warmer weather children can wear red stripe or check dresses with plain white/grey socks or grey/black trouser shorts with plain white/grey socks.

We encourage the children to be as independent as possible when dressing/undressing so velcro shoes and elasticated ties are a must. Some supermarkets sell white shirts with a velcro top button. Please encourage your child to practise trying on their uniform independently at home, turning jumpers inside out, zipping coats etc as this is very helpful.

Please ensure all uniform is clearly named and that your child can recognise their own name label. A name label with a picture on is useful.

Children need to bring a Rydon book bag to school everyday. Please make sure it is named and has a keyring attached to it so it can be identified easily by your child.

School uniform can be purchased from Thomas Moore https://www.thomasmooretoymaster.com/ My  Clothing https://myclothing.com

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning is invaluable in offering children further opportunities to develop core values of teamwork, resilience, respect and responsibility. The children go out in all weathers and there have been some incredibly wet, cold and muddy sessions. Please see the list below of all the items your child needs to bring on forest school days.

The children need to arrive in school on an Outdoor Learning day wearing:

  • Long trousers and long-sleeved top which you don’t mind getting dirty.

  • Appropriate footwear for the classroom and playground.

  • A waterproof coat

In a clearly named bag (please ensure the items are also named):

  • Wellies/walking boots/old shoes. (the children will change out of these when they are in the classroom)

  • Waterproof trousers

  • Extra socks

  • Gloves, hat and scarf

Medicines

Only medicines prescribed by your child’s GP may be administered by a qualified first aider and after a medical form has been filled in (available from the office). The medicine will be administered at 12.00 noon only. This form also needs to be filled in for asthma sufferers who require their inhalers as and when. Inhalers and the forms are then kept in a designated area in school which is accessible during the school day with adult supervision. Please inform your child’s teacher of any medical conditionsallergies and complete the online form.

Head Lice

This is something which can affect children. There is no stigma attached to this and head lice tend to prefer clean hair. Please keep your child's hair tied up and check your child regularly. If your child contracts them please inform your child’s teacher and an email will then be sent out to all parents whose child is in that year group asking them to check their child’s hair.
